The tests explained

Last updated 2 November 2026

There are two tests. They look alike, but they are used for two different purposes.

The indfødsretsprøven (citizenship test)

You need this test when you apply for Danish citizenship.

  • 45 questions and 45 minutes.
  • Every question has two or three answer options.
  • 35 questions come from the study material, 5 are about current affairs and 5 are about Danish values.
  • You pass with at least 36 right. At least 4 of the 5 values questions must also be right.

So there are two rules, and you must meet both. You can have 40 right and still fail if you got only 3 of the values questions right. Our mock shows both rules with figures and says which one you did not meet.

The medborgerskabsprøven (permanent residence test)

This test is one of the requirements for a permanent residence permit.

  • 25 questions and 30 minutes.
  • Every question has two or three answer options.
  • You pass with at least 20 right.

When are they held?

Both tests are held twice a year, in May or June and in November or December, on the same day and for the same fee. See the dates under Dates and fee.

How to practise here

Pick the test and take the free mock. It has the same number of questions, the same clock and the same rules as the real test. You see your result, every rule with figures and your weakest topic. The right answers and the explanation for every question are part of paid access.
